Why We Built Our Own Digital Store Instead of Using Etsy Alone

The tradeoffs between marketplace-only selling and owning your own commerce surface, and why Tavro Studio chose to do both.

Why We Built Our Own Digital Store

Etsy is a powerful marketplace. It brings traffic, trust, and a built-in audience. So why did we also build store.tavrostudio.com?

The marketplace tax

Marketplace fees compound. When you sell a ₹200 printable and pay listing fees, transaction fees, and payment processing fees, the margin shrinks fast. Owning your own store means you control the economics.

Customer relationships

On a marketplace, the customer belongs to the platform. You cannot email them, cannot upsell them, cannot build a loyalty programme. On your own store, every customer is a relationship you can nurture.

Brand control

A marketplace storefront looks like every other marketplace storefront. Your own store is a brand expression — from the typography to the checkout flow to the post-purchase email.

Why not just own?

We didn't abandon Etsy. Marketplaces are still the best discovery channel for digital products. The strategy is: 1. Use Etsy for discovery and initial sales 2. Direct repeat customers to your own store 3. Use your store for bundles, subscriptions, and products that don't fit marketplace categories

The technical side

We built the store on Next.js with Polar for payments, Clerk for auth, and AWS S3 for secure digital delivery. The entire checkout flow takes under 30 seconds. Products are delivered via time-limited signed URLs.

Lessons learned

  • Start simple — we launched with 4 products, not 40
  • Invest in SEO from day one — it compounds
  • Make the checkout flow as short as physically possible
  • Write real product descriptions, not marketing fluff

Closing

Owning your commerce surface is not about replacing marketplaces. It's about building a durable brand that doesn't depend on a single platform's algorithm for survival.
